Modular Shelving done Thoughtfully
If you’re an avid reader of our blog, or a loyal follower of our journey, you may already know that we are obsessed with modular shelving. In all the glorious ways.
Just a few shout-outs to our existing semi-modular shelving before we dive into the why’s and how’s:
What is modular design?
The takeaway characteristic of modular shelving is that they are highly flexible in that it can be configured in countless ways to create personalized storage spaces. Definitely a bonus if the modular shelving unit you have is assembly-friendly and build-able.
Why should you care?
Other than the fact that they are insanely cool, it really is the best investment piece for small spaces or renters (which is mostly the case in our beautiful city, Yangon). Modular shelving allows you to break it apart and reassemble it in a new home, perhaps even in a new configuration.

Research
We studied the very first traces of modular design, namely the “Storage Wall” in Nelson and Henry Wright’s 1945 book Tomorrow House. Dieter Rams, the intellectual giant behind industrial design, came up with his still-popular 606 Universal Shelving System in 1960. Good design comes from deep-rooted empathy, doesn’t it?
& Design
Back at our drawing board, we decided we wanted to carry that same illusion of weightlessness. To achieve the minimal, sleek look we were after, we chose to work with metal and wood. What did we aim for? Ample storage, adaptability, a lightweight frame, and build-ability, to name a few.
